Occupy Through Art: An Art Show in Solidarity with Occupy Wall Street
This show was created out of the idea that art can be and has been historically revolutionary. Furthermore, we believe that true change must first begin within- by consciously changing the way we think and employing our creativity to manifest a better world for future generations. Occupy Through Art includes art in various forms from Occupy Reno, Occupy Oakland, and Occupy New York and stands united with Occupy movements everywhere. We engage in collective symbolic action through this movement everyday, and we invite our brothers and sisters of the 99% to join us.
L’story.
Occupy Reno was founded in October 2011 as a response to the Occupy Wall Street movement that began on September 17, 2011.
The movement started as a response to the fact that 40% of the wealth in the United States is concentrated in 1% of the population. Meanwhile, the needs of the other 99% are being neglected and misrepresented. Occupy movements across the country and the world are trying to unite the 99% to take back power to the general populace.
As the Occupy movement gains recognition, the question continues to be asked, “What exactly are you trying to accomplish?”
Those with an appreciation for the abstract will understand that few things can be accurately explained in such simplistic ways. We simply do not have an easy answer.
The system is so complexly corrupt that the issues of importance to us can not be isolated from one another. In this way, the needs of the 99% are inextricably connected.
We do know this: We have more in common than we do different. We all have an equal voice. We value community. We value people over money. We as Occupy Reno wish to develop and harness the necessary power to effectively conflict with the predominant patterns and change them.
